Hospital planning
Before delivery, confirm which legal documents the hospital should receive, who the hospital recognizes for newborn decisions, room and visitor arrangements, and discharge planning. Hospital procedures should be coordinated with the carrier's preferences and applicable legal documents. The hospital birth plan checklist can help organize those conversations.
Parentage
There is no single nationwide pre-birth-order process. Depending on the jurisdiction and facts, parentage may be addressed before birth, after birth, by operation of law, or through another court procedure. Birth certificate and vital records
The names that appear on an initial or final birth record depend on state law, the applicable parentage order and vital-records procedures. A court order does not always mean a final birth certificate is available immediately at delivery. Discharge and travel
Medical discharge is determined by the newborn's clinical team and the hospital's procedures. If you must travel after birth, ask your attorney what legal documentation may be needed and separately confirm airline, passport, consular or other travel requirements that apply to your situation. The carrier's recovery
The carrier's postpartum care and recovery depend on the delivery and her individual medical circumstances. Compensation, reimbursements or post-delivery benefits should be handled according to the written agreement and applicable law, not a universal timeline.
Relationship after birth
Some intended parents and carriers remain in contact and others do not. The useful approach is to discuss expectations before the birth while allowing both sides to revisit them as circumstances change.
