Base compensation
Base compensation is the core agreed payment to the surrogate for the journey. The amount is negotiated or set through the relevant program and can differ based on experience, location, program structure and other case-specific factors. It should not be inferred from a single available-profile database or from one advertised program.
Allowances and reimbursements
The agreement may also provide for reimbursement or allowances related to travel, mileage, childcare, lost wages, maternity clothing, medically required support, communication costs or other journey-related expenses. What is included varies by contract.
Event-specific payments
Some agreements include additional payments tied to events such as embryo transfer, invasive procedures, multiple pregnancy, caesarean delivery, cancelled cycles or other defined circumstances. There is no universal fee schedule; the signed agreement controls.
Insurance and medical costs
Insurance should be reviewed before treatment so the parties understand whether the surrogate's existing policy can be used, whether additional coverage is needed, and how deductibles, exclusions and uncovered pregnancy-related costs will be handled.
Escrow and payment administration
Many journeys use an escrow arrangement or another third-party payment process. Funding requirements, release rules and documentation should be defined before payments become due.
Base compensation is not the total surrogate-side budget
For intended parents, the relevant budgeting question is the full contractual obligation, not just the headline base number. The total can include base compensation, allowances, reimbursements, insurance-related costs, escrow administration and event-specific payments.
How to compare compensation offers
Compare like with like. A quoted “total package” should not be compared directly with another program's “base compensation.” Ask for a written breakdown showing what is guaranteed, what is conditional, what is reimbursed at cost and what is excluded.
The most useful number is not the biggest headline figure; it is the complete, itemized compensation schedule attached to the actual journey.
