Three Paths to Finding a Surrogate
1. Through a Surrogacy Agency
The most common path for first-time intended parents. The agency recruits, pre-screens, and presents surrogate candidates from their active pool. Advantages: the agency handles vetting and coordinates logistics; disadvantages: agency fees of $25,000–$50,000. For most first-time intended parents, the coordination value justifies the cost.
2. Independent Matching
Intended parents find their own surrogate without using an agency, typically through online communities (surrogacy-specific Facebook groups, surrogacy matching websites, forums like SMO), personal networks, or referrals. Advantages: no agency fee; disadvantages: intended parents handle all coordination themselves, with no professional intermediary. Best for experienced intended parents or those with a specific candidate in mind.
3. Known Surrogate
A friend, sister, or other trusted person who offers to carry for the intended parents. Can simplify the matching process and reduce or eliminate agency fees. Requires careful attention to legal and psychological groundwork to protect the relationship. A known surrogate still requires independent psychological evaluation and independent legal counsel — do not skip these steps because you know the person.
What Makes a Good Match
Beyond medical clearance, the most durable matches share alignment on: level of desired contact during and after the pregnancy, views on selective reduction and termination (these must be explicitly aligned and documented in the GCA), communication style, and life circumstances that suggest reliability and stability.
What to Look for in a Surrogate Profile
When reviewing agency-presented profiles, look for: prior successful pregnancies with uncomplicated deliveries, stable living situation, clear and positive motivations for becoming a surrogate, communication preferences that match yours, and explicit views on the sensitive GCA topics (selective reduction, contact post-birth).
The best match isn't necessarily the first profile presented. Take the time to find someone whose values genuinely align with yours — the 18-month relationship you're entering matters enormously.
